IBM buying Red Hat for $34 Billion is the biggest deal in the history of open source. In June, Microsoft bought the open source software repository GitHub for $7.5 billion. And Now IBM has decided to go one better and fork out $34 Billion to buy another open source stalwart, Red Hat – the biggest deal ever in the open source community. IBM will pay cash to buy all shares in Red Hat at $190 each. Shares in Red Hat closed at $116.68 on Friday before the deal was announced. This deal is a big shock in cloud computing, open source software and Linux.
What is IBM?
IBM (International Business Machines), frequently referred to as "Big Blue", was founded in 1911 following the merger of four companies in New York State by Charles Ranlett Flint, it was originally called Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company. It would be renamed to IBM in 1924. IBM is a global technology company that provides hardware, software, cloud-based services and cognitive computing.
