How PMP Exam Questions Changed: AI, Sustainability, and New Domain Weightings Explained

Sep 11,2026

Killtest provides updated PMP exam questions for candidates preparing for the Project Management Professional exam. The questions can support focused review, but candidates first need to understand what PMI changed in July 2026.

PMI launched the current PMP exam on July 9, 2026. The principles remain familiar, but the exam now gives much more weight to Business Environment and places AI, sustainability, stakeholders, and value inside realistic project scenarios.

Current PMP Exam Details

  • Launch date: July 9, 2026
  • Questions: 180 total (170 scored and 10 unscored pretest items)
  • Exam time: 240 minutes
  • Breaks: Two optional 10-minute breaks
  • Domain weights: People 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26%
  • Ways of working: About 40% predictive; the remaining 60% divided between adaptive/agile and hybrid
  • New question formats: Case or scenario questions and graphic-based questions
  • Training requirement: 35 hours, unless the applicant holds an active CAPM certification

PMP Exam: Five Changes You Should Notice

1. Business Environment now carries 26%

PMP Exam Domains Previous exam  July 2026 exam  Difference
 People 42%  33%  Down 9% points
 Process 50%  41%  Down 9% points
 Business Environment 8%  26%  Up 18% points

  • People covers leadership, conflict, communication, knowledge transfer, team management, and stakeholder alignment.
  • Process covers planning, scope, resources, procurement, finance, quality, schedule, status, closure, and value-based delivery.
  • Business Environment covers governance, compliance, change control, risk, organizational change, continuous improvement, and external conditions.

Process remains the largest domain, but Business Environment has more than tripled in weight. A study plan based on the previous 42/50/8 split will leave too little time for the current business-focused content.

2. AI appears inside project decisions

AI is not a separate PMP domain. It may appear through an AI-enabled dashboard, project data, an automated recommendation, or another tool used in a scenario.

Candidates may need to decide:

  • Whether the information is reliable enough to use
  • What human review or governance is required
  • How the proposed action affects risk, quality, privacy, stakeholders, or value
  • Which project artifact or process should validate the result

PMP candidates do not need to train machine learning models or memorize an AI product catalog.

3. Sustainability is tested in context

Sustainability can influence planning, risk, compliance, quality, delivery options, and project requirements. A question may ask the candidate to compare approaches, respond to an external requirement, or balance sustainability concerns with stakeholder value and project constraints.

The exam still tests project management judgment. Sustainability changes the conditions around the decision.

4. Questions require more interpretation

PMI added two notable formats in 2026:

  • Case or scenario questions may contain a longer situation with several related parts or project artifacts.
  • Graphic-based questions may require candidates to interpret a chart, graph, diagram, dashboard, or image.

The exam may also use single-response multiple choice, multiple response, enhanced matching, point and click, matching, and pull-down lists. Some interactive formats depend on the testing method.

Approximately 40% of the exam represents predictive project management. The remaining 60% is divided between adaptive/agile and hybrid approaches. These approaches appear across all three domains rather than in separate sections.

5. Eligibility and live training rules have changed

Project experience used for eligibility can now fall within a 10-year window, and PMI recognizes additional education pathways. Applicants still need 35 hours of project management training unless they hold an active CAPM certification.

Beginning December 1, 2026, live instructor-led training will count only when it comes from:

  • A PMI Authorized Training Partner
  • A China Registered Education Provider
  • An eligible accredited academic program, including a PMI Global Accreditation Center program

Training completed before December 1 remains eligible under the current rules. PMI also states that self-paced courses may still come from any organization.

How to Prepare with Updated PMP Exam Questions

The current PMP exam outline rewards application more than isolated memorization. A useful study process starts with the exam objectives and then uses updated PMP exam questions to find gaps.

  1. Map your study notes to the 33/41/26 domain split.
  2. Give Business Environment enough time, especially governance, compliance, risk, organizational change, and external conditions.
  3. Study AI and sustainability inside project scenarios.
  4. Mix predictive, agile, and hybrid decisions instead of reviewing them in separate silos.
  5. Practice interpreting charts, dashboards, artifacts, and longer case descriptions.
  6. Review why each answer fits the situation and why the alternatives do not.
